Hobnob is a focal point, a meeting spot for single, dating, and married Christians in their mid-20s to mid-40s looking for fellowship. Our goal is to create an environment full of life where people can have fun together, meeting people with similar beliefs and interests. We are an inclusive group, so everyone is truly welcome including non-Christians.

We have moved!

We have finally moved to a more interactive site. Google Groups is where we now lay our heads. There we can have more open discussions, complaining about how sore our arms are from rock climbing, how badly we got beat at poker the night before, where the upcoming swing dance is, and which showing of the new feature film everyone is heading to. So much to talk about, and now there is a place to do it.

So head on over there if you haven't done so already. Subscribe, and you can talk away: google.com/group/hobnob

Outdoor Rock Climbing--Saturday, Sept 15th

Back by popular demand...

We are heading to Rocky Butte this Saturday to do some rock climbing. I was up there last week and I must say these rocks are FABULOUS! There is so much more to climb than at Horsethief, with better texture and taller routes.

Gear: I will be bringing two ropes, the necessary anchors and webbing, two harnesses (large), one chalkbag, and two pairs of rock shoes (mens 8.5 and mens 9.0). You can climb in tennis shoes or hiking boots, though rock shoes will be much easier. If you want to rent, head to REI Portland. You will also want a pair of shoes to walk around in the dirt, since there is a little bit of hiking involved.

Cost: I am free. A donation of a couple bucks would be nice, to help out with the cost of the ropes and webbing (they are consumables since they don't last forever).

Location: Rocky Butte overlooking the Portland Airport. It is right off of I-205 just west of the I-205/I-84 junction. We will be climbing on routes up the road from CityBible Church in the morning, and routes just across from the church after noon. (Map of approximate location.)
Note: I will be up there around 9:30am to set up ropes if you want to come early.

Routes: To check out the route maps, click HERE.

The plan is to be in the easier section from 10am to noon, and then head over to the more intermediate stuff after noon. If there are enough beginners, or if the more experienced want to get in some bouldering, we could start off at the top of the Butte and play on the "castle" walls (see left). All experience levels are welcome the entire time. If you are new to rock climbing, you really will want to come at 10am.

TV Fellowship

Not that I am advocating watching television, but I have always thought it would be fun to get a group together to watch a tv show once a week. It would be a fun, relaxed way to fellowship every week. I mean, let's be honest, we all watch a little tv, and most of us tend to have THAT SHOW that we just HAVE to see every week. So if we are all watching it already, we might as well watch it together!

So look through the list and let me know which ones you are interested in (pdx.hobnob@gmail.com ). If it is a small group, I can host it. If large, we will need a bigger place (i.e. let me know if you are interested in hosting). Or we could just rotate every week.

Next up...

Yeh, the September calendar is pretty bare...or should I say nonexistent? Just because the days are getting shorter, doesn't mean that the events have to dry up.

Don't look at me, I have planned my fair share of activities. Rumor has it there we be a First Thursday event (perhaps with some left over Blue Bell?). And then there is the Silver Falls Camping trip (not sure if that is a private invite or a public one, though). Last fall we had plenty of hiking, along with the usual runs and duathlons. Gotta get ready for snowshoeing, snowcaving, and snowskiing seasons, right?

So send me some events to post up here. Sunset Pres' Singles group has sent me some stuff...I just have to find the time to put it up (shortly, I hope).

Horsethief: Rock Climbing&Camping--August 4/5

Horsethief Butte, across the Columbia River from The Dalles, is a wonderful place to rock climb. This is the place where a lot of beginner climbers go to learn the sport, but the rocks are also great for more advanced climbers too. Around the area there a many other things to do too, such as swimming, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, and fishing.

Below are details for an upcoming climbing/camping trip the weekend of August 4-5th. Let me know if you are interested in joining us, either for just Saturday or both Saturday and Sunday! pdx.hobnob@gmail.com

When: Weekend of August 4-5th, leaving Saturday morning and coming back Sunday afternoon.

The focus for this trip will be rock climbing at Horsethief Butte, across from The Dalles. However, there is plenty of other activities to do if you don't want to rock climb, including boating/kayaking, fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, or just hanging out at the camp site.

Camping: We will go to a campground near Lyle, WA. It has potable water, restrooms, and showers. Cost: Around $6/person

Food: Potluck style for Saturday dinner (hamburgers and hot dogs provided), with Sunday breakfast also provided. Cost: $8/person. You provide your own Saturday and Sunday lunches, as well as snacks.

Rock climbing/rappelling:
You do not need to know how to rock climb or rappel. This is a great location to learn. I will provide harnesses and ropes, with everyone chipping in $8/person. If you have rock climbing shoes, bring them. If not, you can rent them at REI, which is around $15 for the weekend. Hopefully there will be enough people with similar foot sizes that people can share shoes. But rock shoes aren't necessary...tennis shoes or regular boots work too.

Other activities: There is a few lakes nearby, along with the Columbia River, so there will be swimming, boating, and fishing. There are also a bunch of trails that are good for hiking and biking. NOTE: to fish, you will need to get a Washington fishing license.

Transportation: Everyone will need to carpool there, sharing in the cost of gas, since there is a fee for extra cars at the campsite.

Things I need to know:
1) Will you be rock climbing/rappelling? If so, what is your shoe size?

2) Will you be bringing a bike, kayak, or fishing gear?

For this trip I will need a solid commitment by July 31st, including a non-refundable $10 deposit (honor system).

Portland Bridge Pedal--Sunday, August 12th

Ever biked over the Marquam Bridge? How about the Fremont Bridge? If you answered "Yes," you either know about the Bridge Pedal already, or else live a little too much on the wild side. Why? Because the Providence Bridge Pedal is the only time during the year that people can LEGALLY ride across these two bridges.

There are three different routes: 6-bridge (14 miles), 8-bridge (24 miles), and the 10-bridge (36 miles). All are easily doable no matter your skill level. If you are wanting to do more biking than stopping, I recommend going in the first wave. With the other waves, people tend to bunch up at the start and over many of the bridges.

As with previous years, I will be forming a Hobnob group so we can get the discount. Individual cost is $25, but as part of a group it is $20. Starbucks also has $3 off coupons for the ride. And if you are a new member of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) you can do the ride for free (membership is $35 for the year).

So let me know if you are interested in riding with us! pdx.hobnob@gmail.com

Perseid Meteor Shower--Sunday, August 12th

Every year in mid-August the earth passes through comet debris resulting in the annual Perseid Meteor shower. This year is supposed to be extra intense since the peak of the showers happens when there is a New Moon (August 12th). You can normally see a couple showers per minute, with a handfull of the really bright ones per hour.

So I am calling all that are interested to get ready for a Shooting Star party like no other! We could even make it into a midnight picnic party too! To get away from the city lights, I am scoping out places around Beaverton and Hillsboro...know of any good spots? There are a lot of open country fields out there. Though the meteor shower starts around 9pm, the intensity will peak much later in the night, perhaps 12-1am.

Get the basics down about star watching, like where Polaris ("North Star") is, where the Ursa Major ("Big Dipper") is, and where Cassiopeia is ("The W"). Using these easy to find constellations, you can find Perseus, which is where the meteors appear to be coming from (map1 and map2).

Pacific NW L'Abri Conference--July 26-29th

"L'Abri Fellowship was founded by Francis and Edith Schaeffer to provide an environment where Christians and non-Christians could seek answers to questions about God and truth. Following in that tradition, a L'Abri Conference is an opportunity to feed and hone the mind in an effort to deepen one's understanding of what it means to be a Christian in our society."

The Pacific NW L'Abri Conference (website) will take place at Willamette University in Salem, OR July 26-29th. It looks like a great opportunity for growth and discussion.
